The Ban of TPO in the EU

The Risks

As industries increasingly prioritise safety, sustainability, and environmental responsibility, the shift towards TPO-free resins is also gaining momentum. The photoinitiator TPO (Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide) has been widely used in the curing processes in multiple industries due to its effective curing properties under UV light. 


In recent years, increased environmental and health worries have resulted in more stringent regulations. A study conducted in Germany in 2020 discovered that TPO caused significant histological changes in the testicles of male rats, ultimately leading to infertility. Additionally, a separate study in France confirmed that consistent reproductive toxicity was observed in male rats, which also led to infertility. These findings, along with the growing regulatory scrutiny, have led the European Union to enforce a ban on products containing TPO starting in the year 2025. 


This ban has accelerated the search for safer alternatives.

We have been proactive in eliminating TPO from most of our resins to ensure that our resins not only meet but also exceed the upcoming EU regulations. For the few remaining resins we have that still contain TPO, we are working extremely hard to remove this substance before the EU deadline.
